Mayor Holloway commented that this was not the end of an era but the beginning, a new era for the Grand Casino Island Resort.

Work has since begun on the Grand Casino and by late summer a temporary casino will be set up. In two years it is projected that the resort will be fully open. The work will cost Harrah's, the new owner around $1 billion but this investment shows faith in the Biloxi gaming Industry.

Due to legislature passed in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina the casino can now be built close to water instead of on barges as was previously done.

The opening of Grand Casino in the summer is opening opportunities for approximately 1,500 jobs and that figure will increase dramatically over the next few years as the casino expands.

As well as the Grand Casino many other resorts are re opening along the Mississippi shoreline. Beau Rivage is planning to re open this summer and understands that the labor market is competitive. Approximately 12% of the total employees required have been hired. The casino is expecting 2,000 former employees to return which leaves about 1,400 job opportunities.

To attract experienced workers to the area these casinos are offering incentives such as child care, car and bus pools and housing options, understanding that people come all sorts of backgrounds and they have to think carefully about catering to their needs.

The Grand Casino has sent letters to previous employees and almost all of those who replied did so in the affirmative. Letters have also been sent out to those who worked at any of Harrah's entertainment properties in order of seniority.
